Suffocation Successfully Shakes Up The Formula Again

Suffocation is a band that has almost single handedly changed the face of the death metal landscape in America. Their signature breakdowns have influenced a generation of hardcore punk bands and created the genre of deathcore. Their latest album is titled "Pinnacle of Bedlam" and just might mark a brilliant, but fateful, end to a band.

The album marks the first since 1995 to not feature Mike Smith on drums. He is replaced by former drummer Dave Culross, who performs wonderfully. Unfortunately, vocalist Frank Mullen announced that he would be cutting back on his touring with the band, which is never a promising sign.

The music itself is as technical and fast paced as they come. The musical abilities of the guys in Suffocation has never been questioned, but you would think they were out with something to prove. The guitar riffs are one of the few things in metal that could keep up with the speed of Dave’s blast beats. This in sharp contrast to much of their material since reforming in 2002. Gone are the melodic chugging riffs.

"Pinnacle of Bedlam" features the signature sound that many young bands are now trying to copy. The lightening fast guitar riffs and blast beats sound like a mainstay in metal music, but no one does it like Suffocation. The founders of the new era of death metal have given us another amazing album, and hopefully they will stick around for another one.
