"Descension" Is A New High Point For Coheed and Cambria

Not many progressive rock bands can claim the kind of nerd following that Coheed and Cambria has. As a band that has released only concept albums contained within a science fiction storyline, they are the stuff nerd dreams are made of. The second part of their double album "The Afterman," titled "The Afterman: Descension," has been released and finishes this two part tale of Sirius Amory.

The two albums tell different parts of the story, but "Descension" has a greater variety of musical genres to it. More so than the first half, they step into some uncharted territory for a modern progressive rock band. Horns, electronica, funk, and more are all explored in "Descension." Even songs that might seem standard for a prog rock band stand out against the current landscape of music.

Claudio's unique voice really stands out on this record. Well suited for the science fiction story being told, his voice carries you high into space for an epic journey. The conviction in his voice is what carries the story, and Claudio has plenty of it.

A short piece like this can barely scratch the surface of what the band has done with "Descension." The incredibly deep story, the layering of a variety of instruments and more boggle the mind. Album after album they push the boundaries of their sci-fi storyline and this is a welcome addition to it for old and new fans alike.
