Liu Shikun is an internationally renowned Chinese piano maestro, who is, as international critics put it, “a pianist with a rare magic”, and “a genuine first class pianist”.

At the age of 3, Liu started his piano lessons, and he won the first prize at China’s National Children Piano Competition at 9 years old.
In year 1956 in Hungary, Liu, at the age of 17, got the third prize at International Franz Liszt Piano Competition and was specially awarded for his performance of Hungarian Rhapsodies. Then and there he was exclusively granted by the Hungarian government a small bunch of hair of Franz Liszt. In 1958 Liu earned his huge international fame as second prize winner at 1st Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. Both Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter spoke approvingly of his lustrous presentation and technique on piano, his born gift and enthusiasm, and praised him as piano genius.

Maestro Liu Shikun graduated from China Central Conservatory of Music and received his extended music education at then Moscow Conservatory in Soviet Union, which was one of the most prestigious music school in the world. There he studied piano from the famous professor Fenberg. In his music career, Liu had toured and given lectures in scores of countries, and cooperated with scores of symphony orchestras worldwide for performance of piano concertos. He was invited to judge a good number of international piano competitions. His records were released in China, Russia, the U.S., Japan etc. The record of his playing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Boston Symphony Orchestra and the prestigious Seiji Ozawa was one of the bestsellers in record industry at that time. Liu was the very first musician of China mainland who gave concerts in Hongkong, Taiwan and the U.S.

Not only does he play, he also composes. He had quite a number of piano pieces under his name, e.g. The Youth Piano Concerto and the Piano Concerto “Fighting Typhoon”.
Maestro Liu Shikun has been invited to perform for all Chinese presidents and governmental officials such as Mao Zetong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao etc. They listened to him attentively and received him in audience. So did former Soviet Union leaders, former presidents of the U.S. and France, and highest officials of other countries.

Maestro Liu is now commissioner of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, standing director of Chinese Culture Promotion Society, member of Hongkong Arts Centre Board appointed by Hongkong Chief Executive, chairman of Hongkong (Overseas) Arts and Literature Federation, honorary professor at China Central Conservatory of Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Shanghai University, Shandong University and other schools of advanced studies.

Since 1964, Maestro Liu was more than once elected representative of China National People’s Congress, member of CFLAC - Federation of Literature and Art Circles, Standing director of China Musicians Association and chairman of Performing Artists Association, Deputy director of Arts Bureau under Ministry of Culture of People’s Republic of China. He was then dean of department of piano at Central Conservatory of Music.

Maestro Liu settled himself down in Hongkong from Beijing in 1990. In addition to giving piano performances, he started to work out piano arts projects under his name. Now he boasts some 60 “Liu Shikun Piano Arts Centre” in 30 cities including Hongkong, Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing and Guangzhou. The franchise house focuses on giving piano lessons and marketing musical instruments. Besides, he runs 6 “Liu Shikun Music Art Kindergartens in metropolitan Beijing and Shanghai. Nearly 40000 piano learners were attracted to his music projects. His own label piano Swayder receives a good market recognition.

Nowadays Maestro Liu Shikun is not only a piano performer, a composer, but also a music educator and an entrepreneur. He is expecting a new leap in his career.
